My name is John Mailer and I was born and raised in Fort Smith, Arkansas. I attended Sunnymede Elementary, Kimmons Junior High, and Northside High School. Throughout school I was involved in band as a percussionist and was a member of the Arkansas All-State Band. I am an eagle scout and I enjoy just about anything that involves being outdoors.
After high school, I accepted a full-tuition band scholarship to Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, Arkansas, and spent five of the best years of my life becoming the person that I am today. During my time at Tech, I was a member of the Arkansas Tech Marching Band and a proud member and officer of Kappa Kappa Psi, national honorary band fraternity. As a student in the Art department at Tech, I was given a wide range of experience through classes involving, not only graphic design, but also fine arts classes that helped me develop skills in color theory, creative processes, and the communicating of ideas through design.
I graduated from Arkansas Tech in May of 2003 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Graphic Design. I returned to Fort Smith after graduation and accepted a position at the Times Record newspaper as a page designer/copy editor. During my time at the newspaper, I developed a great appreciation for developing a quality product while adhering to strict daily deadlines. As a graphic design graduate, I also had the opportunity to assist the staff graphic artists with informational graphics and feature packages for the newspaper. I was also involved in the development and design of Hawgs Illustrated magazine that continues to be published by The Morning News of Northwest Arkansas.
For a brief period of time, I worked full-time at the newspaper and worked as a part-time graphic artist at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith. In February of 2005 I accepted a full-time design position with the University. During my time at the University, I have had the privilege of working as, not only a graphic artist, but also production coordinator for the University's Marketing & Communications department. From January through September 2007, I served as Interim Coordinator of Marketing & Communications. As Coordinator of Marketing & Communications, I supervised a staff of three designers and one editor. This position has given me a great sense of marketing as our office works closely with the University Administration to help develop and protect the University's brand.
I am available for freelance work and I am always looking for ways to further develop as an artist and designer, so please feel free to contact me.
Thanks,
John B Mailer III
